Anushka Fashion began the way most good shops in Shirur begin — with one shutter, a few shelves, and a family that knew exactly who it was buying for. Our neighbours. The teacher from the next lane who needs a crisp cotton kurti for school. The college student who wants a co-ord set that actually looks like the one online. The mother shopping for a Diwali frock for a five-year-old who will refuse anything scratchy.

You will find us at Pachkandil Chowk, next to Muskan Tailor, in the middle of Kapad Bazar. It is a busy corner, and our shop is busy with it — jeans and plazo on one side, kurtis and three-piece sets stacked to the ceiling, night suits and tops in the middle, and a whole wall that belongs to the children. Nothing here arrives by accident. Every lot is picked in person, checked for fabric and stitching, and priced so that it can go home with you the same day.

Over the years the shop has grown, but the counter has not changed. People still come in, sit down, ask for a colour they saw on Instagram, try three sizes, take advice from whoever is behind the counter, and leave with a bag under their arm. That white bag with अनुष्का फॅशन printed on it has become a small landmark of its own in Shirur.
